As housing costs rise, the definition of home is shifting within contemporary economic and social realities. Multigenerational living has become a necessity, not only financially, but as a strategy for collective care. This project responds to these changing patterns of domestic life by reinterpreting an existing typology. Referencing the dense, repetitive rhythm of New York townhouses, the design investigates how this urban form can adapt to new social and generational conditions while maintaining its identity.
By rethinking the relationship between the traditional townhouse and the modern duplex apartment, the project proposes a flexible framework for multigenerational living. The design prioritizes shared spaces and visual connections to encourage interaction between residents, families, and neighbors, while preserving degrees of privacy. Structurally, the building operates as a single, continuous system rather than a collection of isolated apartments. Through strategic program organization, it registers daily life across different levels, creating spatial and social relationships that reframe multigenerational housing as a cohesive, shifting domestic environment.
