Community Center at Sara D. Roosevelt Park

Building a community center within a public park raises critical questions about the threshold between public and private space. To preserve the park, the building touches the ground lightly, creating a continuous, covered extension of the landscape and offering spaces for people to gather, organize, and create. The structure is composed of perforated steel beams, steel columns, corrugated metal, and service cores.

Programs on the second floor, offices, multipurpose rooms, a dining area, coworking spaces, and service rooms, are organized around a central skylight, with inner and outer circulation routes. The central opening within the inner circulation brings natural light to the ground floor and engages the two levels. The outer circulation surrounds the programs and connects users to the neighborhood, extending into a perimeter balcony.

An angled façade system supported by tension wires creates a buffer zone that functions as a greenhouse, aiding thermal control while providing space for planting, air circulation, and maintenance. The result offers users spatial flexibility and the possibility to adapt the building to environmental and personal needs.
